Lesson planning for Physical Education teachers

As the new school year looms, so too do the demands that come with being a Physical Education teacher:

*Thinking up ideas to keep pupils engaged

*Preparing new schemes of work for you and your department to use

*Reviewing key terms and rules for this Autumn's sports

If you're already feeling the pressure of writing A+ lesson plans that governing bodies, like Ofsted in Britain, will approve of, whilst also juggling the need to meet curriculum targets, then you're not alone.

What's your main worry for the new school year?

Of the teachers we spoke to over the summer holidays these were their three main concerns:

Quote Engagement: How can I keep all pupils interested and engaged? Quote
Quote Time management: Have I got enough time and the tools to plan my first term? Quote
Quote Knowledge: Am I up to speed with all the latest drills and skills? Quote

We listened to your concerns and have been busy all summer improving our teaching tools to help ease you into the new academic year. As you're short on time I'd like to quickly let you know about some of the latest time-saving Sportplan tools and resources.

Your time saving teaching resources and tools

*1. Online lesson planner

Sport planning templates for PE Teachers

Whether you have to follow strict UKCC development framework or you're looking for a simple template, you can now quickly and easily create, manage and share lesson plans online. All plans are automatically saved your Sportplan account.

I've really enjoyed using the planner- it's a lot simpler than I thought it would be and quicker too! I will definitely be using it from now on to plan my personal sessions because it is a nice clear format and it's handy having all my sessions in once place. I like that you can have it in PDF format as well so I can download them and print them off

Similar to Dropbox, all your files can be saved into folders for easy sharing with colleagues using the online folder tool. The folder is especially useful in busy, close knit PE departments - your more experienced teachers can share plans with the less experienced teachers. It's also a fantastic way to store the whole year's lessons in one place when you have to report back to official education moderators.

*2. Ideas to keep your pupils engaged including the plenary

Thinking up a short exercise to wind up a lesson successfully can be difficult. Perhaps you need a football drill to succinctly pull together all the passing drills you have taught, or a fun way to tie in all the cricket ground fielding drills in the final ten minutes of the lesson.

I am mainly a football coach but also work in a primary school now where we do loads of basketball and hockey. This site has been really helpful, especially with the coaching points.

With over 12,000 drills and games across 12 sports, including all the major GCSE curriculum disciplines, you can always find an exciting way of wrapping up the lesson that your pupils will respond to positively. Sportplan covers everything you need from warm up ideas to kick start lessons to sport specific disciplines such as taking a penalty corner in hockey.

*3. Not many playing fields have WiFi

Not many fields have WiFi - that's why we recently launched the Sportplan app for iOS and Android. The app is free to download and means you can take your drills and plans with you wherever you go. Once you've watched / opened a plan it gets automatically saved to the app so you can watch it later, even when you're not connected to the internet.

Make sure you give the upload video feature a try - we think it's a game changer! And if you like the app, please rate it. If you don't like it, let us know why so we can continue to improve.

If you think there's something still missing let us know!
